Jenny Davis | Final Friday at the Workroom

Featured Artist: Jenny Davis, Silver Linings Art

Artist Jenny Davis was first introduced to paper making while working with the Peace Paper Project. Having recently finished cancer treatment she took her bras and drain tanks and turned them into paper. "That's when I was hooked," she says.

After that Jenny began to learn more about the process and acquired a Hollander Beater with a grant provided by the Lindsborg Arts Council. She began giving art workshops and making paper with the Tammy Walker Cancer Center as a way of giving back to all those that had helped her through her fight.

Now, Jenny is a full time art teacher with the Salina school district. She gives paper making workshops as well as teaches other art classes to youth and adults in Salina and Lindsborg.

Join us 6-9pm for art, a glass of wine and live music by Craig Owens and Dale Black.

"I craft handmade wood ware, also known as treen, from locally-sourced wood. I hand-carve spoons, spatulas, ladles, chopsticks and more. I also turn bowls from green wood, using a foot-powered lathe I built myself. The bowls are then allowed to dry before finishing which usually results in some warping. I don not make any effort to prevent this warping. Only in very recent history have turners worked dry wood resulting in perfectly round bowls and I enjoy the dynamic swoop of the bowl's rims.

I make these ware with hand tools, many of which I made myself. The final surface is straight from the tool, whether it be straight knife, hook knife or lathe hook. Axe marks are sometimes still visible. No sandpaper is involved for a few reasons. One, the surface will not get fuzzy after washing because the fibers are cut, not torn by abrasives. Two, leaving tool marks creates a surface that I find honest and aesthetically pleasing. And three, I hate sanding.

The painted spoons are painted freehand by my wife, Callie Cale, using acrylic paint.

I finish all my work with a food-safe blend of mineral oil, beeswax and carnauba wax."

"I often struggle to simply enjoy a sunset or a summer field; instead, I fret about the possibility of forgetting the scene, which compels me to preserve in it something more concrete than my memory. I consider myself a recorder or transcriber, documenting something that Mother Nature has already created. This view diminishes my attachment to my paintings.

I paint acrylic landscapes from places I have been. Recently, most of my paintings are of Oklahoma and Kansas. The natural beauty of our land and the sky moves me. I respond most to scenes that seem unremarkable - open, flat land, tidy crops, back roads and their accompanying road-side weeds, and the expansive skies above it all.

I want my paintings to transport viewers to somewhere that is familiar and comfortable - even ordinary. My paintings capture what a place and a sky feel like, but they are not too specific: I want viewers to layer their own memory and their own meaning onto my paintings."

Wichita Riverfest is in it’s 48th year celebrating community. From the beginning, as part of the City’s Centennial celebration in 1970, the goal was to bring the entire community together, to build community pride and focus on Wichita’s beautiful natural resource, the Arkansas River. Last year, more than 450,000 attended the week-long celebration! This year, we’re taking The Swing indoors to Century II’s Exhibition Hall and will be popping-up during Riverfest!

"I am a mother of 4. I paint things. People are my inspiration. I have a thing with faces. Painting people solidifies them in my memory. Blessed with a vivid imagination, I have found that changing my perception can created shifts in my external reality. I'm trying to learn from the reality presented to me. The act of painting, creation itself. I manifest my reality. In art and in life. In my explorations of the abstract, I like to imagine the subtle, the ethereal. When boundaries blur, where does one entity end, and another begin? I play with lights and darks and experiment with contrast. I work in layers. I adore painting with acrylic. It can be opaque but also transparent depending on what I'm needing. It is such a flexible medium."
